The shaken baby syndrome curriculum for nurses developed by Massachusetts Citizens for Children was approved in 2005 by the Massachusetts Association of Registered Nurses. Nurses who complete the training now receive 1.2 Continuing Education hours. Over 170 nurses have been trained in four hospitals. Pre and post tests were added as part of the training beginning in June 2005. The average pre-test score on the 11 question survey was 59.5% with a range of 45% to 91%. Post-test scores improved to an average score of 89% with a range of 72% to 100%, documenting a 30% gain in new knowledge after the training. Evaluations of the curriculum by the nurses indicate high overall satisfaction. Eighty-five percent (85%) stated the information presented was either excellent (67%) or very good (18%). Eighty-five percent (85%) rated the instructor's knowledge as either excellent (78%) or very good (7%). Seventy-four percent (74%) said their knowledge of SBS improved and 86% said it was likely they would share the information with colleagues. All participants who returned the survey agreed that the training met its stated goals and objectives, effectively defined SBS and its clinical presentation and predisposing factors, and provided comprehensive instruction in the protocols to teach new parents.
