Infant Crying is Often the Trigger....
Understanding infant crying is crucial to SBS prevention. Infant crying is the most common trigger for violent shaking. A caretaker "loses it" with a crying baby and shakes the baby violently. Sometimes violent shaking is part of a pattern of abuse against the child. Sometimes the shaking becomes progressively more violent until the child stops crying. Sometimes the shaking is a "one time" episode. A good way to raise the subject of Shaken Baby Syndrome is to simply ask "How's the crying?" All babies cry. Some babies cry more than others.
