Infant Crying is Often the Trigger....

Understanding infant crying is crucial to SBS prevention. Infant crying is the most common trigger for violent shaking. A caretaker "loses it" with a crying baby and shakes the baby violently. Sometimes violent shaking is part of a pattern of abuse against the child. Sometimes the shaking becomes progressively more violent until the child stops crying. Sometimes the shaking is a "one time" episode.

A good way to raise the subject of Shaken Baby Syndrome is to simply ask "How's the crying?"

All babies cry. Some babies cry more than others. Infants cry for many reasons:

          • hot
          • hungry
          • bored
          • sick
          • wet
          • afraid
          • lonely
          • need to suck
          • and sometimes they just need to cry!
