Who are We?
In response to six tragic cases of Shaken Baby Syndrome in 2001, leaders in child abuse prevention and treatment, medicine, public health, law enforcement, and child care services throughout Worcester County, Massachusetts, came together to form the Central Massachusetts Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention Campaign. The group met for the first time in July, 2001, at the Central Massachusetts Regional Office of the Department of Public Health. In attendance at that first meeting were representatives from the Massachusetts Department of Social Services, the Department of Public Health, the Office of Child Care Services, the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, The Worcester Healthy Start Initiative, the Worcester Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police, the Office of District Attorney, the Office of Attorney General, Henry Heywood Hospital (Gardner, MA), UMass Memorial Medical Health Center (Worcester), Harrington Hospital (Southbridge, MA) and the Child Protection Program at UMMHC. The Central Massachusetts Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention Campaign began on that day. The group developed an eight point plan for reducing the incidence of injury and death in Central Massachusetts due to Shaken Baby Syndrome. Patricia E.
